Cyber attacks are getting bigger and smarter

We’ve all tried at some point, to buy tickets for a big event only to find that the seller’s website has crashed under the high demand (think Peter Kay last year!). The retailer’s site collapses because the server is overloaded with traffic that it doesn’t have the capacity to process.

There’s a trend with cyber criminals that are exploiting the same principle. Criminal Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks your business, flooding your server with internet traffic to overwhelm the system and forcing it to fail. However, there is a new trend that we are seeing over the past few months. DDoS attacks are not only lasting longer, they’re increasing in size, becoming more sophisticated and happening more regularly.

Last week, the biggest ever reported DDoS attack was attempted sending 71 million requests per SECOND to its target’s servers. Previously the biggest reported incident stood at 46 million requests per second.

Dan Thompson, Business Development Manager for ILUX talks through what this means for your business and some practical guidance on how to avoid becoming a target.

For the majority of businesses, having your website down can be inconvenient, but for some, it can be catastrophic. It means that your business and your customers are unable to access services. The attack may trigger a temporary failure, or it could be more serious.

In 2022, the average DDoS attack lasted 50 minutes. That may not sound like a long time but what effect would it have on your business? It’s enough to create angry customers, or would it bring your business to a grinding halt? Any downtime can be costly but there’s also the interruption and cost of fixing the issue. On top of this, we are seeing a worrying trend where businesses being targeted by DDoS attacks are receiving huge ransoms to stop the attack.

What does this mean for you?

Ensure that all your security measures are up-to-date and working as they should be. Are your firewalls up to the task, with DDoS monitoring and prevention tools set up? And is your team fully aware of the importance of staying vigilant?

If you need our help, please get in touch. We’d be happy to run a free audit of your systems and infrastructure and report on any recommended actions you should be taking. Just get in touch.
